Disappointing quality

Comments On Jun 11, 2020:I guess in the past I have bought the Deluxe Mill kits. These are not the same quality and are difficult to assemble. I'll stick with the Deluxe Kits from now on.

Measure twice (maybe 3x), cut once

Comments On May 18, 2019:If you plan on making more than one I recommend purchasing the Nylon chucking Blank, item 1045750001. Easier than a waste block. Like Stanley above, I cut my wood 9" for a 8" mill. When I was finished with all the sanding and finishing I found out the mill was too long for the 8" size. I had to drill the bottom another 1/2" deeper. No big deal. ....If your blank is an inch longer than the mechanism you choose you will find that you are only removing 1/2 inch from the length of the blank, so your mechanism will be 1/2 inch too short. If you remove your 3 tenons you will have the right length, but you do not have to do that if you have wide tenons. I would suggest making your original blank only 1/2 " longer than the size mill you are making. In other words, 8 1/2" blank for an 8" mill, 10 1/2" blank for a 10" mill.

Measure 20 times, cut once

Comments On Oct 21, 2016:Got this to make my first pepper mill. I failed miserably, since I apparently didn't get the measurements 100% right. It is very critical to get them exactly right if you want your mill to look perfect. Once I get back around to doing mills again I plan on giving it another shot.
The mechanism itself works great and looks super snazzy.

Excellent Mill

Comments On Dec 14, 2014:I have used other mill kits and after a year or so they do not grind the way they used to. These mill will last for the long haul. If you make the mill to sell the last thing you want is to have your customer come to you and say it no longer works. You build a reputation for your fine craftsmanship you don't want that reputation to be tainted by a bad pepper mill kit. Get this kit and you wont have to worry about that.

Great Mechanism with unclear instructions

Comments On Sep 16, 2014:I love this mechanism; I have made 20+ pepper mills with these. I have tried a few different types of mechanism and found that I like the grind of the pepper with these better than other more expensive brands. I agree with the other reviewers that the instructions aren't real clear. In my opinion it's easier to make your mill a little smaller than try to get the length just right. I have found that if you pre-assemble your mill before final assembly, (holding the grinder flush with the bottom hole) the threaded end should stick out of the top about a 1/4"; inch (about half the threaded end) for a proper fit. It's real easy to cut the rod (not the threaded end) and carefully reshape the cut end with a hammer so it flares out and the grinder stays on. Then screw everything together, you will save yourself a headache. Drilling on the lathe and having a second chuck with spigot or pin type jaws that fit in the 1-5/8 opening at the bottom of the mill in my opinion is essential to making a successful pepper mill.

Challenging for a rookie.

Comments On Oct 18, 2013:Overall this is a good project. I used dark cherry for mine. The size is critical. The instructions say to start with a 9" blank for an 8" finished size. If you do just that, your mill will be too long for the grinder arbor. Not sure if the tenons are supposed to be parted off. I didn't remove mine. I agree with the other reviewer who used pin (spigot) jaws on a chuck. That's much easier than using a jam chuck. Pay very close attention to the instructions and read them over a few times before you start.

Instructions

Comments On Mar 06, 2013:I recommend using a story board first with a scrap piece of wood because the instructions do not indicate the optimum length that the threaded part of the rod should stick out from the top. Use pin jaws instead of a jam chuck, which makes turning more secure and easier. Also allows finishing of the ends. One of the small screws lacked slots (out of six kits). An advantage of this kit is that only requires two Forsner bits.

Great kit

Comments On Jan 21, 2013:I have made a number of these and really appreciate the selection of lengths offered to fit any design. The instructions are straight-forward and the product is easy to make and assemble. I have tried a few kits from different manufacturers, but these are definitely my favorite.
