Comments On Dec 06, 2020:I turned 3 of these and they turned out great... no pun intended. The only thing I wish is that there was a clip on them. I like to keep these in my shop apron, and the clip would help prevent them from falling out.
I wasn't aware of the threaded barrel end, but it came attached to the lead holder, so it was obvious that there was a threaded end. I did have to change my glueup of the barrels slightly to prevent the glue from getting inside the threads.

Comments On Mar 20, 2017:This kit creates a useful, heavy-duty pencil. The kit seems to be well made with quality components. I wasn't careful enough getting the lower bushing into the threaded end of the brass tube. These are very fine threads and were slightly damaged - enough to cause problems assembling the kit. After some filing, reaming and heavy torque it threaded together, but it looks like it belongs in a toolbox. I'll be more careful on the next one, but a better bushing design would help.

Comments On Jun 22, 2016:This makes a great finished product. The pencil is durable and the sharpener works well. I have made several now and need to add one caveat to the one mentioned by Douglas. When pressing or glueing the top hex in place, take care to align the flat surfaces with the middle hex ring. The purpose of the hex shapes is to keep the pencil from rolling. Aligning the flat sides of the two hex rings enables this. Getting too creative with the shape of the pencil can also defeat this feature if the wood extends beyond the hex rings. I still rate this kit as excellent and will continue making and selling them.

Comments On Sep 14, 2012:This kit looks and functions really well. I made one (technically two) for my father to take on construction missions trips. The issue I had was during assembly of the the sharpener piece, you have to be extremely careful not to glue it so that the sharpener cannot be used. I went through two trying to do this properly. You either end up using too much glue and glue it all up and cannot use it, or you use too little glue and it does not stay together.
Otherwise, like I said before, once its finished it looks great and very functional.
