Comments On Sep 10, 2016:These are handy mandrels which will find uses other than making closed-end pens. Mine saved me when I found that I was missing a bushing for a pen. I just mounted it using this mandrel and carefully turned it, measuring both ends with a caliper.

Comments On Apr 01, 2015:I previously used a different closed end mandrel system - it was extremely complicated to use, and it took me a while to get it to work. It looked quite substantial, but still had to use the live tailstock to hold the blank in place. For this mandrel, I can use the same chuck that I use to drill the blanks, thus eliminating one step. There is also more room on this mandrel, so I can have a larger closed end blank. I love it!!

Comments On Oct 09, 2013:Although I have 3 pen turning mandrels for turning shaving Razorhandle and sometimes Pen turning, I bought 2 of them and use one for Razor, when I have to make without extra tail part hardware. I turned several Razors and most of them sold and it is very convenient for me turning my shaving Razor handle with closed mandrel

Comments On Jun 19, 2013:I have been making pens for more than 4 years and when I found these mandrels, I was very excited. This is going to be a new and exciting style. I know that a new style takes practice to get proficient, but I've found a couple of issues that I had to address. The way the mandrels are currently made, that pen blank is too long to make the closed end. I made some minor modifications to the ones that I bought. I cut off a portion of the 'closed' end and machined down some at the 'bushing' end. I left about 1/8" on either end of the locking bar. I really like these new products; they are well made and fill a need for a formerly homemade tool at a very reasonably price. I have purchased 3 sizes and plan to purchase one more.

Comments On Jul 09, 2013:By any other name, Craft Supplies' Closed End Mandrels are simply traditional, high quality pin chucks. I have these in four different sizes and have found them to be precision machined and overall extremely well finished and well made. I use them in collet chuck and they perform exactly as intended; other holding methods, such as a standard drill chuck, will work as well. They greatly expand design possibilities and allow for making closed ends on a variety of projects: I find them most useful when used in making closed-end pens and key-chain items that normally would have metal caps. The Closed End Mandrels come furnished with a spare roll pin in case you lose one in the shavings underneath your lathe bench, and spare, replacement pins are also available individually at a nominal price. I give these mandrels a big thumbs-up and can't imagine getting by without them in my shop. They are inexpensive enough to warrant purchase rather than incurring the expense of hiring a machinist make these for you -- a great item at a fair and reasonable price!
