Nice classic look

Comments On Dec 03, 2014:This pen kit is attractive and has great quality. The action is smooth. The decorative ring in the center was a little challenging to get right for me as a new wood turner, but I think it'll only take one to get the hang of it. I think the next will be easier. It's due to the need to have to cut a tenon that it effectively slides onto. Otherwise, it's a great kit.

great intermediate kit

Comments On Sep 20, 2014:the tenon kind of freaked me out at first, but there was really nothing to worry about.
make sure you put masking tape over your blank when you attach the center band. i always seem to manage to get glue on the blank no matter how hard I try not to.

Great Beginner Kit, Popular Pen

Comments On Oct 13, 2013:I turned three Slimlines as my first pens, then turned a few of these. I'd have to say I like these better from a turning standpoint. The ring that goes over the top section makes this pen just a hair more complicated than the SL. Still, it gave me the confidence that I could machine wood parts to fit with metal parts. The directions given with the pen are great. The only problem I've run into when turning these pens is having the barrel crack when inserting the transmission. There are numerous ways to prevent this and it's not inherent with the design of the pen.
From a pen standpoint, these are preferred by most people who want pens from me. They're not small and thin like the slimline, which for some reason puts most people off. I have also turned a couple of cigar pens and most people have turned them down because they are larger and heavier. The European pen seems to be "just right" when it comes to use. As with all turned pens I've had, they write much smoother than others.
So yes, this pen is right for you.

Great kit

Comments On Nov 11, 2012:I've made over 20 of these kits with only a few mistakes. It's a great starter kit that helps you practice sizing tenons and squaring the shoulders of them. Assembly is fairly easy, but I've noticed that the twist mechanism must be pushed REALLY far into the bottom tube for the ink refill to extend correctly. On the slimline kits if built correctly you can simply push the mechanism in until you reach the indented line, but on these kits you have to continue pushing far past the indent. It's very tricky to judge and I now just slowly push it in, test, push in, test, etc until I finally get it right. I've screwed up 2 or 3 kits by pushing the mechanism in too far. If you are careful you shouldn't end up with any problems though.
