I have been using the 1624 lathe for about 5 years and find it of excellent quality from pen size projects to bowls up to 18 inches. With the outrigger large projects can be worked. The speed range is sufficient for any project I have attempted and the speed can be changed easily in a manner of 20 seconds or so. Because of the lighter weight of the lathe, wood has to be close to being in balance or the lathe bounces around, but with a bandsaw and/or chain saw this is easy to do. Overall I am very satisfied with it's operation and quality.

A great lathe that offers everything I needed
This is my first "real" lathe, an upgrade from my old entry-level Jet that gave me my introduction to woodturning. I've had it for just over a year now, and it's proven to be everything I had hoped for. The operation is smooth and quiet, and electronic variable speed works flawlessly. The digital speed readout is clear and easy to read, and all the controls are well located and easy to operate. The banjo and tailstock slide and lock securely with no problems. Assembly was easy, and the heavy cast iron stand has slots to accommodate 2x lumber for making a bottom shelf. I actually made a 2x4 box with sides and bottom first, filled it with 100 pounds of sand, and then put the top shelf on it - that gave me a shelf and some additional vibration dampening. Speaking of vibration, there really isn't any. I've turned some heavy, out-of-round juniper logs, and the Jet handles them fine. Roger at Craft Supplies was great during the ordering and shipping process, following up with me to be sure everything was okay. The shipping company they used was extremelly cooperative about getting the lathe off the truck and up to my shop. The only problem I had was a bad reversing switch, and I called Jet and they sent a new one out immediately. All in all a great lathe and a great experience - I love it, and I can definitely recommend it!
