Great addition to my shop. I've always had some difficulty repeating angle on skews and finger nail gouges. This system takes all of the mystery out of sharpening. I would like to see something for the micro tools – so far I haven’t found a repeatable way of doing tools with short shafts.

My new set of Raptors arrived today and I had been looking forward to fixing the angle on my skew - I had been having trouble getting the platform of my Wolverine set to the right angle and distance from the wheel. I wanted a 35 degree angle on my skew so I picked up the 35 degree Raptor, then a little while later I measured 70 degrees on the skew. It finally dawned on me that the Raptors are for single bevels and the skew is a double sided bevel tool, so you end up with double with what the angle on the Raptor is, but this means that the Raptors can't handle a skew - if they could they'd have 20 & 17.5 degree Raptors available and they don't.
Editors Note: You're correct. Skew chisels typically require a bevel angle of 30 degrees or less. Raptor Setup tools are designed for turning gouges and scrapers.

Most of the time my grinder is on a shelf. The standard v-arm was too long so I purchased a replacement and cut it to a length that suits most of my needs. I still have the original longer arm in case there is a need for the length.

I am happy with this tool. It really has saved time by allowing me to quickly touch up a chisel as an alternative to setting up my sharpening jig and grinding a new edge. Very slick and convenient...best of all, fairly priced.

This hone has really helped me keep my bowl gouges sharp. I don't have to return to the grinder nearly as often. Once the gouge starts to dull, a few passes with this hone, and it's back to cutting. It's really saved me a lot of time.

I received the grinder via FedEx ground in about 5 days, well packaged with the wheels mounted. It is clearly labeled as made in China, though Scheppach is a German company. The unit is heavily painted with an enamel appearing paint, which might hide flaws, though I haven't found any. The wheel guards are solid, the eye shields flimsy but adequate, and the tool rests worthless, as is typical of consumer grinders. The installation instruction picture was mislabeled, but installing the eye shields and spark guard was simple and obvious. The wheels are friable white, of Chinese manufacture, proved to be flat, and seem adequate for now, though I will upgrade to a 3X wheel (or maybe even a CBN wheel) in the future. The power cord is a little smaller diameter than expected, but the unit only draws 2.5 amps, and is of adequate length. The base is light weight cast iron and has 2 mounting holes. When checked, the unit was tilted slightly toward the left, and after tightening the rubber feet, the wheels were vertical, though the wheel covers were not quite level. On powering up, I noted the on-off switch goes up to turn on. The motor slowly powered up to speed, without any significant vibration or funny noises. The wheels had a mild wobble on one side and a moderate wobble on the other. By fiddling and adjusting the position of the stamped steel stabilizers/washers on each wheel, I was able to eliminated the wobble in one wheel and markedly reduce it in the other. Satisfactory to me. I mounted the grinder with a wolverine system and it fit properly with the grinder raised 5/8". I added a discount store goose neck lamp since this unit lacks one. I was able to get a very good edge freehand off the platform on the finer wheel and was surprised to find how helpful the magnifier in the eye shield is when assessing the edge. I have not done the fiddling required to get the vari-grind set up to the wheel height. The grinder performed well through one day of turning. I cannot comment on long term performance or durability, but Scheppach offers a 12 month warranty. At this point, I am very satisfied. Dean Center
