    Good burls, but unstable

Take note that these burl blanks are NOT stabilized. The pack I received had 2 that were so brittle and warped I have yet to even attempt to make a pen from them as I'm sure they will blow apart as I turn it. The other 2 were great quality and in good shape for burls (IE: they held together fairly well and had no major cracks or splits). If you have a way to stabilize these blanks or want to go through the hassle of coating them with super glue between chisel passes you can get a good looking pen from them.

    good variety, varied quality

This is a good kit with a variety of wood, but as with any wood order made online be prepared for varied quality. I cautiously ordered this with that in mind and overall I'm satisfied with this pen blank pack. Anytime you order wood without first seeing it you can guarantee there will be mixed results. I rated this at 4 stars because for a "choice" blank collection, 2 of the pieces were of substandard quality in my opinion. Keep in mind though that this is my opinion and I do admit I have a a fairly rigid definition of a quality pen blank.

    Difficult to work

The bean and matrix are well adhered, but the matrix is softer than the bean and the bean tears out taking matrix with it when turning. The problem is worst before the blank rounds out, but the problem continues the thinner the blank gets. I failed on three attempts to turn the blank. In the end I found success by roughly rounding the blank with a belt sander and finishing the job with increasingly finer sand paper. The matrix readily plugs up sand paper, but it can be done.

It's not easy to go Green!

Bought these closeout blanks thinking they would be great as an "environmentally friendly" option. Surprise! Very hard, compared to wood & difficult to finish. The end product looked good, but I had to find the right method to achieve a gloss finish - DO NOT TRY TO WET SAND! The paper swells when wet, just fine sand and oil finish. Paired with Australian satinwood uppers for a University of Michigan pen. Go Blue...

    Good but could be better

I'm fairly new to truning, so i was really excited to get this blank. It was going to be a Christmas present for my little sister. It looked great plenty of color and I loved the patterns in the woods. Got half way done and the wood just split apart. I don't put all the blame on the blank, I'm sure I wasn't using the right technique or some thing, it just stunk not being able to give her that. I will probably get another soon and try again. If it works out I'll wirte a new review.
